The Dublin Writers Museum was our first stop as a
tour group (only 10 of us) and it was a great introduction to what was
to come. The building was built in the 1700s. The purpose of the museum,
of course, is to encourage interest in Irish writers and writing. Ireland
has 4 Nobel Prize winners for literature: Samuel Beckett, WB Yeats, GB Shaw,
and Seamus O'Heaney.

We visited the home where Oscar Wilde grew up from 1855-1878.
The home is at No. 1 Merrion Square, a stylish and affluent place to live. Oscar's
mother held "salons", or parties, devoted to conversation, literature, politics, etc.
His father was an eye doctor and inventor. Across the street from the house is a statue
of Oscar, which the locals hate. It sits on the edge of a beautiful park in the
middle of the city. Here is a larger view of the Wilde statue. No, it's not painted...that
is different colored stone used to create the statue.
